It’s August, and that means even pink-skinned dudes like me have to slap on some Factor 50 and head for the beach. What will I be reading as I sit on the towel under my trusty umbrella? That’s a good question, but it’s not what we’re here to talk about. This was a deadline I almost missed, but after an all-day editing session on the trains from Santander to Madrid and Madrid to Malaga, I bashed the latest novella into shape, adding a few more spills and tightening up the thrills. At least I think that’s what I did. I was up at five-thirty, so by the end of the day I might as well have been on Rhea myself.
Except that it’s really hot here. And Rhea isn’t, on the whole.
I think I mentioned (in June?) that this story features Rebecca (‘Red’ to me and you) and her friend Doshi, Roland being absent for reasons you may or may not work out, depending on whether you read/remember The Safest Moon (which also makes reference to Red’s escapades on Rhea). But it really doesn’t matter. Even my most brutally honest proofreader admitted that it made enough sense without any additional backstory.

And that’s about it for August, as the Olympic athletes are diving into the River Seine with their fingers crossed, the new British government is wondering where to find the money to fulfil its manifesto pledges, and in the USA it looks like we might just have a presidential race on our hands after all. Lots of other, more depressing, stuff around the world, of course. But we’re not here to talk about that either.
